Card of the Day: 1997 Topps Heathcliff Slocumb

1997toppshealthcliffslocumbI’m not going to beat around the bush: Is Heathcliff Slocumb wearing a BRA in this picture?! I pulled this card from my Red Sox collection the other day and it caught my attention because Slocumb’s jersey is wide open and you can see his left peck — not a common sight on baseball cards.

THEN, I saw some red fabric peeking out from his chest area. What the hell is going on here?! I swear this is a legitcotd card. It could be a torn T-shirt, but that just doesn’t look right here. I’m providing two additional closer scans so that you can see this for yourself.

Anyone need 2009 Topps?

Posted in Newspaperman with tags , , on February 28, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

I just listed a bunch of 2009 Topps base and inserts in my trade list. If anyone needs anything, give me a holler. I’ve also listed needs (inserts) on my want list; also seeking Red Sox parallels and inserts.

Decision 2009: How to Store a Team Collection

Posted in Newspaperman with tags , , , , , , , on February 28, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

For the last two days I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out how to store my Red Sox team collection. Right now I’ve got two massive binders full of cards — separated by year — but I’ve got another 3,000 cards that are sitting in boxes that need to join their Boston uniform cohorts.

I like the notion of putting the cards in binders that way I can flip through them at will, looking at the team sets from each year. But having them stored in that fashion leads to procrastination. It’s tough to carve out time — and space — to lay out thousands of cards, plus binders, and pages. Plus this leads to a lot of shuffling around of cards — not good for the cards.

The alternative is to use penny sleeves for each card and then top loaders for anything I think is worthy of extra protection. Using this method I could store the cards in three-row shoe boxes, which I like. This seems much easier to handle.

How do you store your team (or player) collection?

Card of the Day: 1989 Topps Kirk Gibson All-Star

1989toppskirkgibsonasGot a quick-hitter for you. I’m preparing a small package for a fellow blogger and came across this gem. This card has been out cotdfor TWENTY YEARS but it was not until today that I realized that Topps lists Kirk Gibson as an All-Star PINCH HITTER rather than outfielder on his 1989 Topps All-Star card. Check out the back it’s even better. Flippin’ awesome. Just don’t tell Dennis Eckersley I said that.

2009 Topps: An Inside The Park Home Run

It took me a few years of collecting to really appreciate the images that grace these pieces of cardboard we value so much. And ever since the light went on a while back, I like to study images for what they are … slices of baseball history, as insignificant as they may be.

Well, while sorting my 2009 Topps base cards the other day, something started to happen: I saw a play developing on the cards. This is a bit on the weird side, but I’ve constructed an inside the park sequence using the images from the 2009 Topps set. Enjoy.
