Thrift Treasures Part VI: Yes We Can!

2008toppscampaignbarackobamaI had a dream. I had a dream that one day I would walk into a thrift store and find cards so cheaply priced that I would have no choice but to buy them. There would be commons and stars, but they would be mine. Oh yes, they would be mine. I had a dream.

OK, that’s a pathetic attempt at sounding something like Martin Luther King Jr. Hey, forgive me. It’s Black History Month and much of the nation is still in a state of euphoria after electing and swearing in its first Black president. Stay with me, I swear this has something to do with baseball cards.

I returned to work last week after having five weeks off to bond with my newborn daughter and one of the things I like to do during my lunch break or on my way home is to hit up the good ol’ thrift stores. Well, on Monday I not only found cards, but a Cards jersey. Read more »

Box Break: 2009 Topps Retail Mini Cereal Box

Posted in Box / Pack Break with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 23, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

2009toppscerealMade a trip to the shop today to buy cards, but wound up purchasing only supplies. So I stopped at Toys R Us on the way home and walked away with one of these 2009 Topps Retail Mini Cereal Boxes — not to be confused with the hobby cereal boxes, which contain a cool binder and sheets. It was a fresh case of 12 boxes so I had my choice of Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. Because I’m a Sox fan you know damn well I’m choosing Teddy Ballgame. I figure even if the contents of the box suck, the packaging will serve as a cool little decoration for my work desk. Read more »

Card of the Day: 2009 Upper Deck Jonathan Papelbon

Posted in Card of the Day with tags , , , , , , on February 21, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

2009udpapelbonListen, I love Jonathan Papelbon. As a Red Sox fan, it’s a treat to see him close out games. When he enters the game, you know the thing is over. This must be how Yankees fans have been feeling for the last decade or so with Mariano.

But if there is one thing that really irks me about Papelbon, it’s all this theatrical crap he does on the mound — specifically the cotddamn glare. I suppose it would not bother me as much if the television cameras weren’t always on him, but they are.

No matter what network is showing the Red Sox game, you can damn-well guarantee that if Pap enters the game, the camera will be zooming in on his face right before each pitch. And along the way the commentators will be talking some bullshit about how intense Papelbon is. And sometimes I understand why they do it … especially in the playoffs. I don’t condone it, but I get it; it gets people talking and it adds drama to a sport that many see as bland. Read more »

Blaster Break: 2009 Upper Deck Baseball Series One

Posted in Box / Pack Break with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 21, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

2009udstarquestjeterWhen the 2009 baseball products began hitting shelves earlier this month, I told myself I’d buy one hobby box of Topps and won’t even touch Upper Deck. For some reason I’d become a bitter collector who all but banished any base Upper Deck product from my home. Well, I’ve got to admit something, the ’09 Upper Deck base cards look pretty damn good; I figured I’d snatch up a few retail packs if I saw them– If anything I could use them for TTM requests. Well, I still have not found single retail packs, but I did find a blaster, which offers a guaranteed jersey card. I bought it, telling myself this was the one and only. Blaster results within … Read more »
