Card of the Day: 2008 Topps Update Dual All-Star Relic Josh Hamilton & Ryan Braun

2008toppshamiltonbraundualrelic1I know relics are played out. There was a time I clamored over these things, too. And once in the early 2000s, while trading cards on the America Online hobby boards, I proclaimed that game-used cards would NEVER decrease in value. Damn, I was wrong, wasn’t I? Remember, this was the beginning of the craze and single-color swatches of Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. were still selling for nearly $100.

I digress, today’s Card of the Day is a 2008 Topps Update Dual All–Star Relic of Josh Hamilton and Ryan Braun, serial numbered to just 25 copies. Beckett has this thing listed at $40 — I find this fact odd since Beckett RARELY lists “values” for cards serial numbered that low — but I have a feeling the value of this card could be higher if sold at auction with a proper title. Thrift Treasures Part XI: Low Risk, High Reward

Posted in Thrift Treasures with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 18, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

tt11abCan you believe it’s been three weeks since I last wrote a Thrift Treasures post? Me neither. Just goes to show how little I’ve actually been dealing with baseball cards lately.

Anywho, I had a father-daughter day with my 3-month-old on Saturday and we (I) decided to check out a local high school flea market. These things are held monthly, and I was hoping to chase down the guy from whom I purchased THESE CARDS from last month. After searching, I found him hiding in a poor location. I was hoping he still had some 2004 Bowman cards left and indeed he did. The same price applied 6 cards for $1. I decided to spend $4. The results are within: Read more »

Card of the Day: 1969 Topps Bob Gibson World Series Highlight

Posted in Card of the Day with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 18, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

1969toppsbobgibsonfrontEver since the MLB Network went live in January, it seems as if a night doesn’t go by without there being some reference to Bob Gibson, the great Cardinals pitcher. Most recently, it seems the network has been running on a loop the highlights of the 1968 World Series, the Fall Classic that featured Bob Gibson and the Cardinals against Al Kaline and the Detroit Tigers. In Game One, Gibson struck out a record 17 hitters.

About two weeks ago, while wasting time on eBay, I stumbled upon this beautiful little card that commemorates that performance. The cost: $1. Truthfully, this thing isn’t worth much; Beckett has it listed at $8 and if you really wanted one, I’m sure you could find one for the same price I bought my copy. But as it turns out, this is my first vintage Bob Gibson card. I’m still aiming to add his 1959 Topps rookie to my collection, but I’m not going to be doing that any time soon. For the time being, this card will have to do.

As a side note, this card has a story to go with it. I actually forgot about this card after I paid for it. And I did not remember it until the seller contacted me apologizing for delayed shipping. The reason: She was busy helping her brother move out of Arkansas where tornadoes recently hit. Read more »

Card of the Day: 1999 UD MVP Super Tools Barry Bonds

Posted in Card of the Day with tags , , , , , , , on April 17, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

1999udmvpsupertoolsbarrybondsA few weeks back I purchased a lot of 40 cards — mainly rookies — for like $15. Among the non-rookies was this 1999 UD MVP Super Tools Barry Bonds insert. I’ve owned a copy of this card since 1999 — believe it or not, I actually used to like MVP — but it was not until THIS copy arrived in late March 2009 that I interpreted the name of the insert set as an editorial statement about Bonds character. Some would indeed consider Bonds to be a Super Tool.

Box Break: 2008 Topps Series 1 Baseball Blaster

img_0120Yes, you read that right, 2008. I visited Target this week to do some shopping and lo and behold there were a few blasters of this stuff on clearance. I guess the Excel Distributing company has been bullish lately in clearing store shelves of old product. They go in when they stock the shelves and slap 50 percent off stickers on the older product. Seeing as how I’ve not bought any cards recently, I figured $5 for a five-pack blaster (plus one Bonus Pack) was a nice way to whet my cardboard appetite. I’m really trying to get back into this blogging stuff after spending a few weeks away. Anyhow, the results are within …
