More discount Allen & Ginter

2008AGMiniBlackburn2I’ve been working feverishly to catalog my collection so that trading can run more smoothly. Thus far I’m about 550 cards in, and I’ve not really scratched the surface. Anyway, that’s part of the explanation for my lack of posts lately. If you care to see the trade list, check out it out here. (<- link) I’ll eventually be using this Excel spreadsheet via Google Docs instead of a separate page on this blog. Most of the stuff listed there are inserts from the 90s through today. As I said, I’ve got a ton more to add, so stay tuned as I will update you every time I add another 100 cards or so.

So yeah, as the title of this piece suggests, I found some more discount Allen & Ginter at Target. These are 2008 packs that were marked down to $1.59 each and placed in the “Power Pack” boxes. I found 11 packs which means … DING DING DING … some searcher got to these early and removed one of the packs. Typically Target’s distributor delivers one or two Power Pack discount boxes per shipment. In each one are six packs of any given brand. In short, there should have been a total of 12 Allen & Ginter packs because this Target received a double shipment of discount packs.

I’ll say upfront that these packs reveal why pack searching these days is almost a waste of time. I’m sure the guy who got to these early is plenty happy with his Jeff Francoeur jersey cards; but I pulled something that not even the most savvy pack searcher could have found without opening the pack. Can you say Bazooka back!? Keep reading for the break … Read more »

Allen & Ginter Retail Blasters are Live!

Posted in Box / Pack Break with tags , , , , on July 21, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

2009ginterblasterTo my surprise, Allen & Ginter hit retail shelves this week as evidenced by this single Blaster I purchased. There also were two regular retail boxes at this Target store, but it was clear those had been picked through by some searcher. Blasters are the way to buy this product when it comes to retail anyway. You get eight packs for $19.99, or about $2.50 per. … BUT there are only six cards per pack. The hobby version carries eight cards. Anyway, the odds look pretty similar to the hobby version, save for the frequency of the hits, and the lack of Rip Cards.  (Here is the scan of the wrappers. The top one is Hobby, bottom is Retail.) Keep reading for the Blaster break. Just a heads up, I beat the odds. Read more »

Warning to Collectors: 2008 UD Timeline retail

Posted in Newspaperman with tags , , , , , , on July 18, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

Update: Here’s an image of a Timeline Blaster with the Strasburg sticker ad.

Strasburg

Cardboard Junkie beat me to mentioning this, but retailers have been getting a healthy shipment of 2008 UD Timelines, and on the packaging, distributors have slapped a sticker telling the consumer that one of the Stephen Strasburg USA autographs can be found in the product. This is misleading. The products on the shelves are retail; Strasburg’s Timeline auto appears to be a HOBBY EXCLUSIVE. According to Beckett, the Timeline USA autos are seeded 1:41 in hobby packs. Absolutely no mention of retail.

I got a “Gift” from Topps!

2009ToppsWBCGiftNgoepe1It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! After waiting five friggin’ months, my 2009 Topps WBC card of Gift Ngoepe is here! Someone alert the press … or make that restart the presses.

I arrived home Friday night to find an envelope from Tri-Star Fulfillment — Topps redemption distributor — and within the package was my Gift. Not exactly the most anticipated card of the year, but no doubt one I’d been waiting seeing as how the Topps Web site has stated “card has been shipped” for nearly a month.

So imagine my anger when I opened the package and saw this crap. Is the front of this card really off-center 20-80 left/right, and 20/80 up and down? Yep … and the back is the same way.

Is it that hard to make sure that a redemption card is at least centered OK? I understand that not all cards can be perfect, but you’d at least expect them to be in passable condition. I mean where the hell was Inspection Checker 23 on this one?

Looks like Gift Ngoepe is the gift that keeps on giving. This garbage is headed right back to Topps for a replacement. It’s not about value right now, it’s about principle.

And a quick birthday shout out to South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who turns 91 today (July 18).

Discount Allen & Ginter!

2008AGTimLincecumYahtzee! I think that’s what Stuart Scott used to say in the late 1990s when he was just starting his career at ESPN. Or was it one of the white dudes who said that? Hmm.

Anyway, as the title of this piece says I scored some discount Allen & Ginter at Target this week — six packs of 2008 for $1.59 each. There has been a weird sampling of discount packs circulating through Targets lately, but if I see any packs of Ginter sitting around for the same price as a pack of Orbit gum, I’m buying them all. Here’s the break.

Oh, and keep an eye out for the Pat Neshek card within. Is this perhaps the ugliest Ginter card ever made of a real player? Read more »
