The last few days I’ve had the great pleasure of watching the MLB Network while watching over my newborn daughter during the day time and in the early morning hours. And one thing has become increasingly more apparent: There is no new content on this channel during the weekend.

For the love of God, can someone in New York mix in something new? I don’t care if I end up watching the Yankees pummel the Red Sox for an entire day. Anything but another re-run of the 1986 season.

I’ve come to appreciate all that happened in that spectacular season. I’ve even learned to cope easier with the demise of the Sox during that ’86 World Series. But if I have to watch Tony Gwynn talking about his unexpected five stolen bases in a game, see Davey Johnson’s porn ‘stache or hear more about Gary Carter complaining about Mike Scott’s devastating pitches, I’m going to throw up.

I never thought I could say I would get too much baseball, but I think I just hit my limit.

Ever since this channel went live on New Year’s Day, I’ve been glued to it. I seriously have not watched ESPN or any other sports network since the MLB Network went live. I have no reason to. But now it’s getting to the point where it’s freakin overkill. I need something new to watch.

Also, I’ve noticed an error — an egregious one in my mind — when speaking of the Negro League baseball special that is supposed to run today, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Who the hell is John Mills? In the commercial for this special, there are several players offering soundbites, and as they speak, their name flashes on the screen. But one man is misidentified as “John Mills.” This guy’s name is John MILES.

This may or may not be the MLB Network’s fault, but I’m extremely sensitive to misspelling names or misidentifying players who are supposed to be honored in a special video. Errors happen. I get it. But in this case, with this promotional clip running 80 times a day, it seems to compound the issue.

In closing, I look forward to watching new content this afternoon. I do not know why the new cycle of shows starts at 6 p.m. Eastern instead of midnight. With more than 100 years of baseball history and thousands upon thousands of highlights to show, it would seem more productive to me to feed your audience something new at least once a day. And replaying Games One through Seven of the 2008 American League Championship series is not enough. These games are too new. Give us something that we may have forgotten about.
