Thrift Treasure 81: MLB Showdown ASG finds a home

Posted in Thrift Treasures with tags , , , , , , on February 18, 2015 by Cardboard Icons

I’ll say this up front, I am not a big card game guy.  I never got into Magic.  I never played Pokemon. I don’t hate it.  I don’t dislike people who play such games.  I, personally, have never felt the need to sit down and learn or play those games.  They are games of strategy; I prefer to apply my knowledge — the little that I have — to my hobby, where I acquire real things. That’s just how I operate.

IMG_9512Having said that, I do find some intrigue when I find card game cards at thrift stores.  I have a little knowledge as to what is “worth” money, but I can say that I have not cashed in on anything card game related.  This post, I suppose, follows in those foot steps.

So, in the early 2000s, Wizards of the Coast, makers of the Magic The Gathering cards, produced a series of baseball strategy card game that spanned the course of four of five seasons I believe. The game had a mild following. I don’t recall the cards ever being scorching hot.  And every now and then I find them in thrift stores, usually mixed in with some typical baseball cards. I usually pass on them unless I see an absolute reason to buy:  Multiple foil cards, many “first edition” cards, multiple stars, quantity for little money,  etc.”

On this occasion, I happened to find this box (shown here) sitting in an aisle of photo albums.  It must’ve been mistaken for a photo box, but I knew what it was immediately. When I opened it, I got a bit excited because while the bx itself makes for a fun display, it had a fair amount of cards. I was even more exited when I learned that the $3.99 price tag on it was incorrect for on this day, this item was half off.

IMG_9513So for $1.99 everything in this picture came home with me.  And while I won’t strike it rich with this find, it turned out to be a bargain.

The box contained 5 foil cards …

IMG_9543A bunch  of cards, albeit it a 4:1 ratio of strategy cards to player cards

IMG_9545Some neat team — and other subject/set — dividers

IMG_9546and … 50 2002 All-Star Game cards, which is the whole set.

IMG_9544The funny thing is the 2002 All Star Game is infamous for having ended in a tie, which ultimately led to then-Commissioner Bud Selig to the ASG “count” in subsequent years.

Total cost of these treasures: $1.99

My All-Star Ballot

Posted in Newspaperman with tags , , , , , , , on June 7, 2009 by Cardboard Icons

ASBallotMy wife and I went to the mall the other day, and needless to say I had no real purpose in being there other than my obligation as a husband. She went shopping with a friend, so I wandered aimlessly through the mall for about 40 minutes, being reminded of why I hate shopping establishments such as these. I dislike teen fashion, get sick of seeing single dudes gawk at chicks they have no shot with, and very much hate that at age 29 I feel old walking into any store. I did happen to stop at a few sports clothing stores, you know, the kind where they sell jerseys, but that experience just left me more angry and bitter. What’s up with the new baseball jerseys? They’ve cut costs by reducing the actual stitching on the replica jerseys by using some garbage single-layer vinyl “patch” instead of the traditional stitched patches. Yes, even REPLICA jerseys used to have stitched patches. Anyone rocking a football or basketball jersey they purchased from Sports Authority or Foot Locker within the last two years knows what I’m talking about. Anyway, I did find one thing at the mall that made me happy — a 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Ballot. And it was FREE. Woo-hoo.

We’re still a month away from the game, but here are my selections for the ASG. This is based upon who DESERVES to be starting. Continue reading

Card of the Day: 2008 Topps Update Dual All-Star Relic Josh Hamilton & Ryan Braun

2008toppshamiltonbraundualrelic1I know relics are played out. There was a time I clamored over these things, too. And once in the early 2000s, while trading cards on the America Online hobby boards, I proclaimed that game-used cards would NEVER decrease in value. Damn, I was wrong, wasn’t I? Remember, this was the beginning of the craze and single-color swatches of Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. were still selling for nearly $100.

I digress, today’s Card of the Day is a 2008 Topps Update Dual All–Star Relic of Josh Hamilton and Ryan Braun, serial numbered to just 25 copies. Beckett has this thing listed at $40 — I find this fact odd since Beckett RARELY lists “values” for cards serial numbered that low — but I have a feeling the value of this card could be higher if sold at auction with a proper title. Card of the Day: 1953 Bowman Color Mickey Mantle

**Note: With the All-Star game taking place this week at Yankee Stadium, I will spend the next several days showcasing cards from my Yankee collection.

The Mick. For about as long as I have followed baseball, Mickey Mantle has been a mythical figure to which I could not relate. I never got to see him play, and by the time I truly got a chance to understand his greatness, he near the end of his life. He died in 1995. I still have the Beckett Baseball Monthly issue dedicated to his death. That issue, which I took to school for a week, brought about lots of memories from other high schoolers who spoke of their father’s card collections. And it also caught then attention of one teacher who spoke of Mantle … and then about a newly emerging technology called deoxyribonucleic acid, better known as DNA. Continue reading
