Dueling One of Ones: Father, Son pull pair of Tim Anderson 1/1’s 7-plus years apart

For more than 10 days my order of Topps hobby boxes direct from the factory sat in a FedEx truck in Ohio as the region dealt with brutal weather.

The boxes arrived Wednesday night and my son and I decided to open one box before I jumped on as a special guest on the About The Cards podcast. In the very last pack of the box my son, a 10-year-old collector, pulled the hit: a 70 Years of Baseball Platinum Autograph of batting champion Tim Anderson.

Per the collecting rules we’ve established, he gets to keep whatever he wants from the packs he opens. This includes stuff like this.

It was my boy’s THIRD 1/1 in his three-year collecting career; and it really made me happy because … it’s actually the second Tim Anderson 1/1 in our family.

Back on 11/26/13 I opened a few packs of Bowman Draft from the LCS and in the middle of one pack was Anderson’s unlabeled First Bowman black border paper card. True, the bottom right corner is smashed —only card in the pack that was damaged — but it was a 1/1 of a prospect whose turned into a phenomenal player.

For the record, these cards are NOT available; they’re very much staying in the family.

I pulled a 2013 Bowman Draft Black 1/1 … And it’s damaged

Dropped by my local card shop today — Southbay Sports Cards in Sunnyvale, Calif. — to pick up the new Beckett Baseball and a few packs of Bowman Draft. The unthinkable happened — I actually pulled a black parallel serial numbered 1/1. It was an awesome pull considering I only bought six packs. The scarce — hell, the Unique — card is of White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, a 17th round selection this year. But there is a downside to this story … The card came out if the pack with a smashed corner. I didn’t say dinged– I said smashed. Sad part is this damage happened at the packing factory; this pack came from a sealed box that was opened just minutes before my purchase… And it was the only card in the pack that wasn’t mint. I’m not going to go all irate and call out Topps. I’ll contact them about my options, but I just wanted to share this story since I know the product gets broken heavily, some of you track the 1/1’s, and it was an experience worth documenting.

2009 Bowman Draft Baseball retail packs loaded?

Posted in Box / Pack Break with tags , , , , , , , on February 11, 2010 by Cardboard Icons

So I tried to stay away from 2009 Bowman Draft as I’ve been bitten in the ass way too many times by draft products. But after hearing that the retail version of this product seemed to be loaded, how could I resist. PLUS, those pretty purple refractors caught my eye. Yes, I called a baseball card pretty. Sue me.

Anyway, so basically I go to Target yesterday and there is a single Bowman Draft rack pack sitting on the shelf. I bought it. In the single pack I pulled TWO autographs.

That then prompted me to buy a blaster, which did not yield an autograph but had FOUR pretty purple refractors. Yes, I said pretty again.

Did I get extremely lucky or are these packs really loaded?

As an aside, I am sick of seeing World Baseball Classic cards — also one of the reasons I stayed away from Bowman Draft — but I do not mind pulling cards of these two guys.
