I got a “Gift” from Topps!

2009ToppsWBCGiftNgoepe1It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! After waiting five friggin’ months, my 2009 Topps WBC card of Gift Ngoepe is here! Someone alert the press … or make that restart the presses.

I arrived home Friday night to find an envelope from Tri-Star Fulfillment — Topps redemption distributor — and within the package was my Gift. Not exactly the most anticipated card of the year, but no doubt one I’d been waiting seeing as how the Topps Web site has stated “card has been shipped” for nearly a month.

So imagine my anger when I opened the package and saw this crap. Is the front of this card really off-center 20-80 left/right, and 20/80 up and down? Yep … and the back is the same way.

Is it that hard to make sure that a redemption card is at least centered OK? I understand that not all cards can be perfect, but you’d at least expect them to be in passable condition. I mean where the hell was Inspection Checker 23 on this one?

Looks like Gift Ngoepe is the gift that keeps on giving. This garbage is headed right back to Topps for a replacement. It’s not about value right now, it’s about principle.

And a quick birthday shout out to South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who turns 91 today (July 18).

Topps World Baseball Classic Redemption, Red Hot Rookie

ngoepeI’m not sure if I should be excited about this. Last week I learned that the WBC redemption card I got from my 2009 Topps series 1 box is redeemable for a card of Gift Ngoepe (En-Wee-Pay), a product of South Africa, and a prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
I was hoping for Yu Darvish — just to say I had a card of his, especially now since Team Japan won the Classic — but I suppose it could have been much worse; I was worried that I might end up with a Jerry Hairston Jr., Sidney Ponson or even a Ivan Rodriguez card.
And while I’m on the topic of Topps redemptions, where the hell is my 2008 Topps Red Hot Rookie Lou Montanez? Topps sent a note out about two weeks ago claiming these cards were shipped, via USPS letter. I’ve not received mine yet. Gah!

redhotrookieGot a lovely note this morning from Topps informing me that my 2008 Topps Series 2 Red Hot Rookie card of Lou Montanez is on its way! Can you sense my joy? Do I need to add more exclamation points?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The kicker? Shipment will take 10 to 14 days. Jesus …

On a positive note, I also recently received my Ross Detwiler 2007 Bowman Chrome Draft auto. ~Woo hoo.~

Now only if Topps can work diligently to bang out those WBC redemptions it inserted in the 2009 Topps Ser. 1 product.

Thoughts on 2009 Topps (Box Break)

2009toppsI hit the hobby shop today and purchased my box of 2009 Topps baseball like many others did and let me just say that I’m pretty pleased with what the products has to offer this year. The design is clean — thank god they stayed away from that nasty 2007 design — and the inserts I feel were actually interesting. In recent years Topps has bogged down its base product with so many inserts that they almost seemed to take away from what makes base Topps good — its simplicity. Continue reading
